Spatially localized structures in fluid flows

Edgar Knobloch
Dept Physics, Univ. California Berkeley

Spatially localized structures arise frequently in fluid flows. I will describe the origin and properties of such structures focusing on driven dissipative systems. I will compare predictions from model equations of Swift-Hohenberg type with results obtained using numerical continuation and direct numerical simulations of binary fluid convection in both two and three spatial dimensions.
