Micro-confined bacteria, human sperm cells and choanoflagellates: experiments vs simulations and the other way around....

Verónica I. Marconi
FaMAF, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Argentina

Which are the key physics and statistical ingredients that we need to handle if we want to control swimmers transport under micro-confinement conditions? In this seminar i will summarize our numerical and experimental interdisciplinary contributions to the field of self propelled cells into microfluidics devices and its applications: E. Coli [1,2] and soil bacteria [3], human spermatozoa [4,5] and choanoflagellates [6].
I would like to show you how crucial is first to success in getting a good physical model of the micro-swimmers dynamics and statistics in order to be able to contribute to the design and optimization of real applications. We aimed to fabricate micro-devices for studying, directing, guiding, trapping, controlling and sorting cells in biomedicine, ecology, agronomy and evolutionary biology. These aims are being possible to be achieved thanks to a reach experimental-numerical feedback among molecular biologists, bio-technologists, bio-engineers and physicists.
By the end of this talk i hope to convince you how important is the contribution of physicists to this active field, showing the biology vs physics difficulties of the problems and the present challenges.
